The Flashback
High
school years are to say the least, memorable, more often than not. This was the
time where my life seemed like a platter of hope with side dishes of fun and
fights. And yes... a pinch of despair here and there as well.
Being the latest breed of warriors who had managed to tame the mighty beast casually named ‘BOARDS’, and bring it down was
something to boast about. We were now the new batch of ‘science folks’ hence
giving a fitting reply for all those doubting our abilities.
New classes, new crowd…
When
all was new, then why not? Thus…
••
My time with casual ‘flings’ was over.
Yet somehow the first day of high
school, and I stumbled upon her. One look at her face and I was blown over.
Never had the attendance part of the
hour gotten my attention before, as it did on this very first day of school.
Roll call went on and on, as I sat, gritty
and resolute, waiting to know the name of this angle like damsel.
In a class filled up with mostly new
folks, with Arun and I being one of the only ‘veterans’ my concentration was at
every name being called out by the teacher.
My patience finally bore sweet fruit. ‘Yes ma'am’ that echoed all over the classroom as the name Aleena was called
out, seemed nothing less than violins and cellos playing right in my head.
All the ‘worldly sounds’ had abruptly put themselves on mute.
Once set, it was impossible to take
your gaze off of her finesse. If I may say,
“A dainty girl, with soft butter like
skin,
Lips as petals, her voice, making birds
chatter sound din.”
Sure, her voice did make the chirping
of birds seem nothing more than mere chaos in this perfect world.
Her hair perfectly tied behind, looking
as elegant as the morning sun coming out of the horizon, spreading its orange,
intriguing light amongst all the mortals. She looked nothing short of a pulchritudinous
damsel.
Soon enough, time passed and the ones
who were once acquaintances, were now close friends.
There are very few people in this world
that you are just bound to meet. No matter what options to opt for, universe works out a way to bring them closer. It’s all decided. It’s all fate.
If Aleena was one from the female side,
Tej was sent by God from the male team, thus maintaining the balance of the
universe.
An unknown, to nothing short of a
brother, Tej was undoubtedly one of the most important part of this short life.
What he never could share with his closest friends, he could with me.
“Yeah, she’s the one”, said Tej,
pointing towards a photo in his wallet.
“The one and only I have ever loved. My
first and as of yet, my only girlfriend”. I could sense his voice getting
tearful.
Trying to avoid the question was not
much of use either as he continued anyway.
“She was a junior in my previous
school. Things were good for few months, but went awry later on. I was late,
but never realized so late that before I could even try to fix the damage, it
was all over.” He said, almost choking now.
“Hey, what’s up… all fine?” asked
Aleena in a casual tone, entering the class.
“Suraj… haallo” she shook me a bit, as
it seemed that I didn't hear her.
“Oh! Sorry. I got a bit lost”
“Where, Precisely?”
“Upon seeing thou my fair maiden!” I
replied with a bit of a Bollywood streak put into it.
“Oh my God… You flirt!” she chuckled
along as she ruffled up my hair a bit, and went to her seat.
All Tej could do was look at me in
despair.
Time passed, and my likeness for Aleena
turned into something serious with each passing day.
Be it walking with her to the bus
stand after school hours, and travelling till her stop, and back to school, to fetch my bicycle,
where it was well, hidden, and then cycling back home, or just asking my
friends to get rid of her lunch box, so that she might have lunch with me,
every now and then, no stone was left unturned in the process of trying to woo
her.
And as the time of our school picnic
approached, spending a complete day with her in the waters and the high
adrenaline rides was enough for my mind to trip the switch now, that it was
time to make my move.
Now, she of course didn't say a yes,
and our friendship was completely, though temporarily ruined, it all taught me
one lesson.
If you love a girl, sure, go ahead! Confess it, so
that later you don’t think that you didn't even try.
But on the day of class picnic when she
comes out of the pool surrounded by her friends and you are drooling… probably
not the best day for executing the plan.
The 'plan' fell flat on its face, a
failure!
