“Nice shirt! Bought a new one?” asked Arun.
“Shirt? Dude! He has a new cologne on! Now if that's not intense, I don't know what probably would be!” Srikanth added, throwing his hands in air
“Who’s the new chick?” Arun asked with
a wink.
“Who knows? He has barely spoken since morning!
Bitch, he’s just been humming some songs and grooming himself!”
“And guess what! Not a single roll… or
even a glass of beer! You do realize that this is the most sober the world has
seen you in ages! Right?” Srikanth went on.
The day was special in its simplest
sense. I was meeting Aleena.
A hot and sunny day, like any other in
the month of June. The air-conditioned mall busy with the hustle-bustle of
shoppers and crowd mostly of college students.
The anxiousness to have Aleena in front
of my eyes replaced the unjustified indignation towards the world that had summed up within.
After a wait of a few minutes, she
entered. A crowd of hundreds, and needle in the hay stack was shining through.
“Suraj!!!!” She exclaimed, not caring
of the eye-balls the loud shout grabbed, as she hugged me, tight.
If a six ‘Mississippi’ long hug can’t
throw you off your wary, then nothing can.
••
“You seem different.” That was the
conversation starter Aleena chose.
“Well, things have been different.”
“Yeah, some friends told me what happened.
Suraj, I'm sorry, but maybe it’s for the best.”
“Why did you keep all this from me? Why didn't you tell me you guys broke up?” Aleena said, concerned.
“I’ll tell you that someday. For now,
tell me what’s up in your life!” I said, trying to sound cheerful.
“No Suraj. You know it. If anybody
knows you better than your so called friends and knows how much you can
complicate your life, it’s me. You know that.”
Aleena’s company was relieving, but the
constant bringing up of the very topic I had been trying to nip in the bud was
certainly a diversion from the road of cheers and smiles.
But it surely was time to bring out all
that had been held up inside. All the worries that were imploding had to be
stopped now. I knew it was time to talk it out.
This love-hate was nauseating… it had
to come out, the sooner the better. That might have made me feel better. Maybe…
just maybe… this was the cure!

But why Aleena out of all?
Because she was different from all…
